Land Rover Expedition America Team Successfully Crosses The USA Off-Road

On Wednesday August 21, the nine- member Land Rover Expedition America team successfully reached the Pacific Ocean at Port Orford, Oregon after covering over 4,000-miles and 27 days on this dirt crossing of the USA.  The expedition used Land Rover LR4 vehicles for this landmark drive.
LR_LREA_Update_6_270813_01Land Rover believes this is the most complete trans-continental dirt road crossing possible of America, from North Carolina to Oregon. This incredible adventure trail was based on the Trans-America Trail, the brainchild of Mississippi adventure motorcyclist Sam Correro. Over 85% of the drive was on the unpaved trails, forest roads, farm roads, and other existing dirt tracks that make up the Trans-America Trail.

Expedition leader Tom Collins (TC) used Correro’s maps and the Land Rover navigation system to guide the expedition through thousands of turns. Tom Collins called the architect of the trail from the finish point on the Oregon coast, and Correro was overjoyed to receive news of the safe and successful arrival of the expedition in Oregon.  No other production SUV or passenger car is known to have ever made the complete journey.

“It’s just incredible that Sam’s 30 years of research and thousands of miles traveled has allowed us to do this journey,” said Collins.   “I hope our journey highlights what an amazing job he has done and brings the Trans-America Trail to a new audience.”

Previously, the expedition narrowly escaped flash floods in New Mexico and Utah. In Oregon, the greatest challenge came in the last 48 hours of the expedition. Forest fires in Oregon forced the closure of many forest trails and Collins had to map out alternate dirt trails through Oregon, which resulted in a half day detour.

LR_LREA_Update_6_270813_05“We give our thanks to the firefighters in Oregon who provided us with detailed advice on how to drive around the fire zone safely.   Without their assistance we would have not been able to reach our goal,” said Collins.  “The sight of the ocean is something the team on the trip has been dreaming of.  After weeks of dust, plains, mountains and desert, the Pacific is an awesome sight.”

“The LR4 vehicles have been fantastic. They are stock, with only dealer accessory winches and roof racks.  We did not have any mechanical issues and the only repairs required while crossing the country were a few tire punctures.”

Land Rover launched this expedition to explore the adventures that are at hand within the United States. The Trans-America Trail is a challenge that anyone can pursue, and Land Rover is proud to have been the first production car to traverse the entire trail.

  • Land Rover is proud to announce Solo offshore sailor Hannah White, as the Land Rover Global Brand Ambassador for sailing.  Hannah will be providing the expert commentary in Cardiff
  • The only UK Act in the Series provides four days of fast competition around a stadium-style course in Cardiff Bay, with close-up views of the action and supporting attractions for visitors

The Extreme Sailing Series™Cardiffpresented by Land Rover arrives in the Welsh capital this Bank Holiday weekend for the UK leg of its global racing series, promising hard and fast competition from a full field of eight Extreme 40 catamarans. The only UK event in the competition’s eight global “Acts” will see Land Rover, one of the Series Main Partners, entering its own boat: Team Wales Land Rover.  This will be an invitational wildcard entry, with a predominantly Welsh crew, rich in young sailing talent.

lr_extreme_sailing_cardiff_220813_02The thrilling action will form one of the main attractions of the Cardiff Harbour Festival, with the high-speed catamarans contesting a series of racing challenges in a stadium-style setting, giving crowds a close-up view of the action from the waterfront.

Adding expert insight into the events on the water will be Hannah White, Land Rover’s new Global Ambassador for sailing, she will be providing the race commentary for the Act.

Team Wales Land Rover will be skippered by Cardiff-born Dave Evans. Aged 27, he is one of Wales’ most talented sailors and, as a member of the British Sailing Team, is aiming to compete in the 49er class at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Evans said “I am extremely excited to Skipper the Team Wales Land Rover Extreme 40 as it races for the first time particularly as it is in front of my home crowd.

“Land Rover vehicles have been part of our family life for many years and I have recently been fortunate enough to put the new Range Rover Sport through its paces.  The dynamics, control and outright speed close match the performance of the Extreme 40′s.”

Dave is joined by fellow British Olympic hopeful Chris Grube and, from North Wales, Bleddyn Mon and Tudur Owen.  Trystan Seal, 21, from West Wales, is also in the team, alongside British Olympian and Extreme 40 sailing veteran Will Howden. In spite of their youth profile, the crew is rich in experience and competition success.

lr_extreme_sailing_cardiff_220813_01Back on dry land, Hannah White, will be sharing her expert knowledge with the spectators in her race commentary. Although just 30 years old, she has established herself over the past 10 years on the single-handed offshore sailing circuit, most notably taking a podium position in the 2009 OSTAR, one of the world’s toughest single-handed ocean races. Hannah has also forged a successful career as a public speaker, national broadcaster and presenter, including commentator at the live spectator site for the sailing events at the London 2012 Olympics.

Mark Cameron, Land Rover Global Brand Experience Director said, “Cardiff Bay provides a great amphitheatre for Stadium Sailing with the public able to watch the racing metres from the shore.

“We at Land Rover are delighted to be making our debut as an invitational race team in UK waters supporting a predominantly Welsh youth team, some of whom have their sights firmly set on the Olympics in Rio in 2016. It promises to be an exciting weekend of Extreme 40 action and we cannot wait to be on the start line.”

Whitley, UK, August 21 2013 - Land Rover is launching its first-ever hybrid models
the Range Rover Hybrid and Range Rover Sport Hybrid – which will deliver outstanding fuel economy, significantly lower CO2emissions and

retain Land Rover’s renowned capability and performance. Order books in the UK will open from September 10 with first deliveries in early 2014, the two all-aluminium models are based on Land Rover’s Premium Lightweight Architecture and share an identical powertrain.  They are the world’s first premium diesel SUV hybrids.

“We are excited to introduce the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport Hybrids, the world’s first hybrid SUVs with legendary Land Rover capability.  The addition of a smooth electric drive enhances refinement, cuts CO2emissions and delivers staggering performance on a par with our SDV8 engine,” said John Edwards, Land Rover Global Brand Director.

RR_RRS_Hybrids_Static_04To demonstrate the capabilities of the new hybrids, three Range Rover Hybrids will embark tomorrow (Thursday, August 22) on an epic trip, from the home of the Range Rover brand in Solihull to the home of the parent company Tata, in Mumbai, India.

This ‘Silk Trail 2013′ 16,000km expedition visits 12 countries and takes in some of the world’s most challenging roads, passes and trails, including part of the ancient, 4,000 mile Silk Road connecting Asia with the Mediterranean. These are the first hybrids to ever attempt this challenging route.

The new Range Rover Hybrid powertrain features three driver-selectable modes and combines Land Rover’s popular 3-litre SDV6 diesel engine with a 35kW electric motor integrated with the 8-speed ZF automatic transmission.  The hybrid system, including lithium ion battery pack, inverter and electric motor weighs less than 120kg.

The electric motor produces 170Nm torque to boost acceleration and drives the vehicle in EV Mode. The motor also acts as a generator, harvesting kinetic energy through regenerative braking, charging the battery when the vehicle is slowing.  In driver-selectable EV mode the Range Rover Hybrid can travel at speeds of up to 30mph (48km/h) for a range of up to one mile (1.6km) before the diesel engine seamlessly restarts.

Together, output of the diesel engine and electric motor is 340PS at 4,000rpm and a class-leading 700Nm torque between 1,500-3,000rpm, resulting in stunning SDV8-style performance.  Both models accelerate to 62mph (100km/h) in under seven seconds, deliver strong transient and mid-range performance with a top speed of 135mph (218km/h), combined with a 26 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions to 169g/km, equivalent to 44.1mpg on the combined cycle.

RR_RRS_Hybrids_Details_210813_01The latest generation Range Rover models have all been designed with the integration of a hybrid system in mind.  Consequently, the liquid cooled battery pack is mounted beneath the floor of the vehicle in a protective boron-steel cradle without impacting on the cabin or luggage space.  The Range Rover Hybrid has the same five-seat capacity and luggage space as the standard vehicle and retains the full-size spare wheel.  This no-compromise philosophy is echoed in the Range Rover Sport Hybrid whose interior is unchanged from the standard model, right down to the 5+2 seating.

Both hybrid Range Rover models continue to deliver a class-leading breadth of capability and versatility, enhanced by the exceptionally linear torque delivery from the powertrain and retaining Land Rover’s peerless four-wheel drive system including Terrain Response® 2, with uncompromised wading and ground clearance.

The ‘Silk Trail 2013′ expedition featuring the new Range Rover Hybrids is scheduled to visit France, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, China and India.  The expedition will be broken into 10 separate legs, with the Range Rover Hybrid vehicles driven by teams of Land Rover development engineers and invited media – arriving in Mumbai on October 15.
